My Broadway Review

Grease is the Word

February 8th, 2008

Max Crumm and Laura Osnes who were handpicked by America on the show “You’re The One That I Want” have fell in step with the production and are key to its success. Both have beautiful singing voices and they both bring out the good sides in their characters, Danny and Sandy.

It is the tragic love story of a greaser falling for a high class girl. They come together, fall apart, go through a series of twists and turns, and come together again. Written from a teenage angst viewpoint, the cast is completed by Kenickie and Rizzo, who make few bad choices along the way, and all their friends who are always giving bad advice to Sandy. Frenchy wants to drop out, but gets a visit from an angel telling her to go back to high school. The music always brings back memories and no one can ever forget Greased Lightening once they have seen it.

Critics have said this version of Grease is just a little different because the producers thought it should be a family show. Some have said that the musical numbers make people freeze over instead of just leaving them with chills. Having such a wonderful history with 1978 movie, the play, and now the Broadway musical, it like Grease should come into its own. The story has been around for a good long time and people keep flocking back to see it over and over and over again.

Latest from the Broadway show

February 5th, 2008

In the news, the cast of Mary Poppins has just performed its 500th show on January 28th. Based on the story by PL Travers, Disney created a wonderful movie about the book in 1964. The show has won many awards in the past such as seven Tony nominations, Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical, Outstanding Set Design, and a Theater World Award. The prices for the musical ranges from $25 to $110. It is well worth your time to catch this one.

Cry-Baby has found a new home on Broadway. The musical itself is based on the John Waters 1990 movie about greasers and nerds. The musical opens on April 24 and will be seen in the Marquis Theater.

If you want to see a world known and world famous Broadway show, you should check out Mamma Mia. Songs in this particular musical have come from the Sweden pop group ABBA. You will hear a lot of their songs from the 70’s sung in here. It is estimated that over twenty six million people have seen this show and it is still causing a stir when it comes to any town. It is currently playing in Wisconsin in February.

The Seafarer To End Broadway Run A Month Early

February 2nd, 2008

The Seafarer, Conor McPherson’s latest play, has announced that it will end its run on the Broadway on March 30th. The play began performances on October 30th and has played 19 previews and 133 regular performances since its opening on December 6th, 2007. The play, starring Conleth Hill, Ciarán Hinds, David Morse, Jim Norton and Sean Mahon, is about two brothers, James and Richard Harkin, preparing for Christmas. James “Sharkey” Harkin an alcoholic, returns to live with his brother, Richard Harkin, who is blind and aging. The play takes its titles off of an old English poem which Conor McPherson came across when he was studying in University College Dublin.

The Seafarer opened to some impressive reviews including a resounding vote of confidence from NY Times saying that the play presented one of the finest ensembles to grace a Broadway stage in years but even this couldn’t save the show which will soon come to a somewhat disappointing end.

Replacing The Seafarer in the Booth Theatre will be Thurgood, billed as a one man show and starring Laurence Fishburne. It is the story of Thurgood Marshall who was raised up from a childhood in a backstreet of Baltimore to the Supreme Court of the United States.
