My Broadway Review

Rosie gets B-Way

October 31st, 2008

Rosie O’Donnell’s live show will be in a Broadway theater this year.  She has put it together in the Schubert theater this year so she will be able to perform in front of a live audience of famous New Yorkers.  It’s supposed to be a good show, and knowing Rosie, she will have plenty of her own stars IN the show, not only in the audience.  The show that she will be performing is an NBC variety show, in the style of Ed Sullivan or something like that.  It will interesting to see whether it takes, and whether it stays on Broadway for production, but it’s a good tribute to the old shows that were produced for TV on Broadway.

Broadway closing shows

October 27th, 2008

The Broadway Blog reports that several long-running Broadway shows will be closing their doors at the beginning of the year.  The first to be reported was Spamalot.  Now two more shows will be closing down soon: Spring Awakening and Hairspray.  These are all very well-liked and well-produced.  They have received awards.  But with the economy on a downturn and ticket sales not being that great recently anyway, it should be no surprise that such long-running shows will be on their way out of town.  It is unfortunate, however, that good shows have to drop off.  Earlier this month, Legally Blonde closed as well.  This is a lot of shows to close for one season, but it’s understandable considering how well these have sold lately.

“Chicago” on Broadway

October 23rd, 2008

It’s already been 6 years since the Oscar-winning film came out and Chicago is still running strong.  The musical has been a fan-favorite for many years now ever since it was first performed in 1975.  The stage version has also won Tony Awards, which shows what a quality show it really is.  It runs every night, except Wednesdays, and it also performs on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.  This is a funny show, with murder and conspiracy and great music.  And all that jazz….

Patti Lupone in “Gypsy”

October 17th, 2008

 pattiluponegypsy.jpg

Patti Lupone has been consistently nailing her character Mamma Rose in the musical “Gypsy” since its opening on March 27, 2008. No, that’s not the right word. Consistently assumes that it’s never falteringly and always the same. That’s not the right description. She has been lighting up the stage better and better with each passing performance…like a laser beam that is getting finer and finer, until its concentration is so fine that you can’t tell the difference between character and actor. That’s how impressive she is. Find out more reviews on Patti Lupone and visit gypsybroadway.com.

If you hardly get to spend time with your kids and you’re feeling bad about it, make some time to bring them to Mary Poppins the new Disney Broadway musical. That way, your kids will be able to relate to another family who has to have a nanny. And if youre worried your kids like your nanny more than you, they wont like her anymore after they compare her to Mary Poppins! Plus, the ending assures your children that their nanny will not stick around forever, so it’s best not to get attached.
