Patti Lupone in “Gypsy”
Patti Lupone has been consistently nailing her character Mamma Rose in the musical “Gypsy” since its opening on March 27, 2008. No, that’s not the right word. Consistently assumes that it’s never falteringly and always the same. That’s not the right description. She has been lighting up the stage better and better with each passing performance…like a laser beam that is getting finer and finer, until its concentration is so fine that you can’t tell the difference between character and actor.
